Scrambled Eggs

A direct link to the above video is at http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=CFZVd_Ez23g

I suppose you could say this is a continuation of the "Beatles" theme we started with last week's entries "I Know You, You Know Me", and "You are Me and We Are All Together"... since Paul McCartney tells us when he first came up with the melody for his classic hit "Yesterday", the phrase he would sing to himself is "scrambled eggs".

Isn't it funny how we each have our own perspective, and find it so very hard to imagine some other perspective different from our own?

With my project, I've been trying to get people to understand that "time" is just a direction, not a full dimension, and like any other direction there is an opposite direction to "time" that makes just as much sense (north has its south, up has its down, and time has its "anti-time"). This idea is central to the way of visualizing reality that my book and this project is based upon: look up "time reversal symmetry" if you'd like to know more about how this concept of time having two possible directions is an accepted idea from mainstream science. In my blog entry "Time in Either Direction", I talked about physicist Sean M. Carroll's proposition put forth in a recent article in Scientific American, that there could be other universes that operate in the opposite "direction" of time to ours, which means in those universes it would be like eggs could unscramble and go back into their unbroken shell.

For most of us, that thought is unfathomable. What would it be like to live in a universe where every choice, every random occurrence results not in a bush-like branching structure of more possible outcomes, but less?

Even the idea that there are more copies of our universe created through chance and choice takes some getting used to: but the Deutsch team's 2007 proof confirms Everett's Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics, which tells us there is a wave function of possible futures at both the quantum and macro level. Quantum mechanics is one of the most proven theories of reality known today, so a proof that shows there is a direct continuum from the quantum to the macro world is an important breakthrough: this is why New Scientist Magazine called the Deutsch team's proof one of the most significant science stories of 2007. But the upshot of the Many Worlds theory is that right now, if I break an egg, there are other versions of our universe where I didn't break the egg, and still others where I broke more than one egg, and others where I did lots of other things involving much more than just eggs. Each of those other universes exist, but at any particular instant I can only observe one of them.

Clearly, in our universe, eggs can be broken, eggs can become scrambled, and once that has happened they can't be unscrambled. There are an increasing number of possible paths forward, just as there are many ways to break an egg, but none of those possible paths will reduce the options back to a universe where a broken egg can once again become unbroken.

Now, let's look at this idea from the opposite perspective.

Believe it or not, we live in a universe right now where each choice taken, and every random outcome at both the quantum and macro level, results in less and less choices. As we flip our minds into this opposite viewpoint, it's quite easy to see: by observing one possible outcome, there are a huge number of other logical outcomes that are no longer available. If I get out of bed at seven this morning, I am no longer going to be able to get to the versions of our universe where I got out of bed at six. If I go out my front door this morning and turn right, I am no longer going to be able to get to the versions of our universe where I went out my front door this morning and turned left. With each branching universe observed, a huge number of other universes became inaccessible, because they are no longer part of the fifth-dimensional probability set for our universe in it current state.

In one of the more poetic paragraphs from my book, I talked about the "angels of possibility that swirl around a toddler's head"). Isn't it clear that this is why so many cultures regard their children as a sacred trust? A child has a huge set of possible paths branching out into the future before them: but with each choice taken and every random action, some of those potential futures are pared away. From this other perspective, then, it's like we're living right now in a world where eggs unscramble themselves and go back into their shells!

Ultimately, what we're talking about here is timelessness. Some of the greatest minds of the twentieth century - Einstein, Wheeler, Feynman, Hawking, etc. - have tried to get us to visualize that the distinction between past, present, and future is really immaterial. Quantum physicists like Seth Lloyd and Anton Zeilinger often use a phrase that this project also embraces: in the biggest picture of all, information equals reality. So, whether we're talking about Everett's Many Worlds, or just our own universe moving through time, we should really be thinking about how the other possible states already exist, and have always existed, within timelessness.

(diagram from "Everything Forever". Gevin Giorbrans's caption for this graphic reads:
"The order of one type is the disorder of the other.")

When we're thinking about timelessness, all branches exist simultaneously. As we move down our line of time, each new instant takes away a set of possible branches that are no longer accessible, and adds another set of branches that are now part of the spacetime tree for our universe. This double-edged sword that we're thinking about here is the magic of the two kinds of order, grouping order and symmetry order pushing against each other to create the "now" that we are currently observing: and Gevin Giorbran's wonderful and uplifting book Everything Forever - Learning to See Timelessness gives us a powerful and intuitive way to imagine that process. Click here if you would like to watch the last interview I did with Gevin before his untimely death.

Here, to close, is one of my personal favorites from the 26 songs I've attached to this project: it's about picturing our universe as just one of many possible universes that exist within timelessness. This video was created by Ryan Hill, and the song is called "The Anthropic Viewpoint".

Your Fifth-Dimensional Self

Quotes from a couple of emails received in the last few days:

Your book opened a lot of "thinking" doors for me. It really expanded my horizons... - David Levy, Florida, USA
When I stumbled (is there really such a thing?) across it via the internet I had a sensation tantamount to a quelling of unease and an allaying of confusion. After devouring the book I have had a feeling of "belonging" in the scheme of things. - Richard Ruff, McMahons Creek, Australia
And a quote from a new review of the book at Amazon.com:
This book is excellent for a reader looking to expand their horizon on something more than what is in front of them. It gives you an opportunity to think of all the possibilities you have in life. - C. Leonard

Just a few blogs ago we talked about the "Flipbook Universe" analogy. While digital physics shows how that imagery works for the really big picture of how one universe comes to be selected from out of the omniverse of all possible multiverses, it also works at a very personal level.

Your Fifth-Dimensional Self
Time is a direction in the fourth spatial dimension, a line that is knit together by choosing one possible future out of the probabilities available from instant to instant in the fifth dimension. This means that there is already a version of you in the fifth dimension that from this moment forward has made the best of every bad situation, has made every choice they know in their hearts is the right one to make, and has lived the longest and happiest version of their life.

This also means that there is already a version of you in the fifth dimension that from this moment forward has made stupid decision after stupid decision, has destroyed their future, or has suffered from bad luck and the hurtful actions of others, and as a result has died very soon from now. That version of you, by virtue of hardly lasting at all, is the version which has almost no connection to the bush-like branching structure of future selves that we're imagining here: in other words, unless your death is truly imminent and unavoidable, in the fifth dimension that version is only a tiny subset of your possible future selves from this moment forward.

Let's talk about that first version of you some more. From the moment you were conceived, there was already that one happiest, longest-living version of you, extending out in a specific spime, or as we say in the tenth dimension animation, a specific "long undulating snake" representing a particular version of your timeline viewed from the fourth dimension. That idealized target will change over the course of a person's life, and all but the purest-living and luckiest of us will already have a best-available-future-path that is not as long-lived as the one that was available back when our life started: this is not the point of our discussion. Rather, the point is that there is always a future path available from any person's "now" that will represent the optimum set of choices they could possibly make from this moment onwards.

Many Worlds, Many "You"s
In the Imagining the Tenth Dimension project, we have spent a great deal of time talking about Everett's Many Worlds Interpretation, spacetime trees and quantum probability spaces, but we have also talked about the "beautiful blossoming potential of a newborn child" and the "angels of possibility that swirl around a toddler's head" (phrases from my book): all of these discussions keep taking us back to the idea that genes, memes, and spimes are all just patterns in spacetime, and shadows of higher dimensional forms.

Meditation
In a previous blog entry about my song "Turquoise and White", we talked about the possibility that meditation allows people to connect across time and space to that optimized version of themselves. EEG studies of persons in a meditative state show suppressed activity in the parietal lobe, the part of the brain that people use to anchor themselves in time and space: this interesting connection is also discussed in previous blog entries and in my book.

How Much Control Do We Have?
Does this idea of a constantly adjusting "best" version of each of us for our available future paths offer hope to someone trapped in addiction or other negative behavior loops? Of course it does. Does this mean a starving child in Africa will become rich and powerful if only they make the right decisions? Sadly, in terms of probability, the answer is most likely to be "no", but we all are attracted to the occasional story of someone who has overcome seemingly insurmountable odds: and that's true whether we're talking about achievements through hard work and determination, or lucky lottery winners, or the indomitable spirit of a person who has made the best of a difficult situation.

As you create your one fourth-dimensional path, twisting and turning one planck length at a time in the probability space of the fifth dimension, there is a best possible you that you could be headed towards right now.

How's it going?

Enjoy the journey,

Rob Bryanton

At first glance, this song appears to be about taking a holiday, not much more! Here are some blog entries that talk about the ideas behind the tenth dimension way of visualizing reality which tie into this song:

Information Equals Reality
Seeing Eye to Eye

There are a growing number of studies that show markedly different brainwave patterns in people who are meditating. As I write this entry in February 2008, another one was mentioned in a recent issue of New Scientist magazine, this time showing a correlation between meditation and increased activity in the brain's pineal gland. Here's two excerpts from what I say about meditation in my book:

chanting, drumbeats, meditation, exercise, and many other repetitive actions are often touted as a way for the seeker to find a different plane. Could that plane be outside of our limited fourth dimension?
and...
Meditation is a particularly interesting example of how people can use the power of the mind to change their health and circumstances. Researchers analyzing the EEGs of persons in a meditative state have seen that the parietal lobe, which processes incoming data to give a person the sense of their location in time and space, becomes much less active during meditation. If the parietal lobe would be what anchors us in the first-through-fourth dimension (time and space), then, could suppressing that part of the brain be what opens the person who is meditating up to the healing paths available to them in higher dimensions? This leads us to our next chapter.

Why should meditation cause things to change about our physical reality? Why should ritualized physical activities like Tai Chi cause people to think more clearly, become more "centered"? Why should changing our physical stance, or breathing more deeply, or even just making a conscious effort to smile more be able to change so much about the mind? These ideas are all part of the larger concepts we've been exploring here: what does it mean to be a quantum observer, occupying a physical body, navigating through the information that is our reality? Thinking back to song 5, "Automatic", reminds us of the possibility that the more "integrated mind" (where our narrator voice is quieted and we exist within the moment) might be the more natural state for we living creatures to be in. This also leads to the idea that young children may naturally exist within that state as well, and that supernatural/metaphysical experiences could well be part of their world until our culture (i.e. negative feedback from adults) trains it out of them. Here's one of the paragraphs from my book that has been quoted several times by reviewers:
The beautiful blossoming potential we see in a newborn child is an immensely attractive thing. The angels of possibility that swirl around a toddler’s head can be breathtaking if we catch even a fleeting glimpse. And there is nothing as sad as the tragedy of a child who has been mistreated or abused, and whose life may never be the same because of it. Even from our limited window in the lower dimensions, it is easy for us to intuitively understand what is magical and wonderful about the promise of a child, a promise that is held within the sixth dimension.

We'll be thinking more about that "angels of possibility" concept when we get to song 18, "From the Corner of My Eye". Those "angels", despite their possible religious connotations, have another way they could be described: they could also be part of the patterns in the information that is our reality, the really-big-picture memes that we've been talking about since song one.

Finally, in my blog entry entitled "Everything", I sum up the song Turquoise and White like this:
Sometimes you just have to find a way to relax, because tension and fear and hatred are your enemies. Even a short five minute meditation once a day can help to tune you into your own internal voices, let them be heard or let them be quiet, and can help to move you to a better place in the ten dimensions. Turquoise and White is my song about getting away, even if it's only for a few minutes in your mind. Indirectly, it's also about physical stance and how something as simple as adopting a more alert or a more relaxed posture can change mental attitude, and changing your mental attitude can instantly put you on a trajectory to a better part of the multiverse, even though your location down here on our limited fourth dimensional line doesn't change one bit.

What is reality? All we are is a set of ideas across the dimensions. And that is a beautiful and wondrous thing.

TURQUOISE AND WHITE
Music and lyrics (c) by Rob Bryanton (SOCAN)

A dream of turquoise and white
Water and sand
A dream of fragrance and light
You take my hand
A dream of warmth and water
Suspended in the air
My tropic getaway
I’m there

A dream of laughter and sun
Swimming in blue
A dream so languid and soft
I turn to you
A gentle breeze, a whisper
A day without a care
My tropic getaway
I’m there

Turquoise and white, I close my eyes
And see it in my mind
Turquoise and white, a melody
A calm and peaceful time

A dream of turquoise and white
Water and sand
A dream of fragrance and light
You take my hand
A dream of warmth and water
Suspended in the air
Our tropic getaway
We’re there
We’re there
We’re there

Your Sixth-Dimensional Self

One of the more extraordinary claims I make in my book is that what we think of as the "soul" is more akin to Marvin Minsky's "Society of Mind" concept, and that we spend our lives integrating and rejecting various meme-systems floating out there in the dimensions, and the particular subset we have taken on at any one moment defines who we are... but this is a system that changes somewhat over our lives. This gives us an easy way to answer the old conundrum, where do all the new souls come from? There were less than ten million of us on the planet in 10,000 BC, 2.5 billion of us in 1950, now we're around 6.5 billion! Statistically, the chances of any one of us here today being the reincarnated soul of a person who lived on this planet in the last two thousand years are becoming vanishingly small, down into lottery ticket territory. Unless...

By the time we have imagined that timelessness is a real description of our place in the cosmos, and that what we think of as a soul is a specific collection of memes, then there is no reason to assume that there is a limit to the perceived number of souls, or the locations in time of those souls. In fact, there is no reason to assume that you couldn't walk up to someone on the street right now and realize that you have met another incarnation of yourself! But it gets even stranger than that.

Living on a Mobius Strip
According to my way of imagining the dimensions, in our physical bodies we are each on the equivalent of a mobius strip, travelling down a specific "line of time" in the fourth dimension, unaware of the twists and turns that we are making in the dimensions above. I have written much about what this means in the fifth dimension, including the fact that Theodor Kaluza proved and Einstein eventually agreed that the field equations of gravity and light can be combined if they are defined in the fifth dimension, not the fourth-dimensional space-time that seems to have become stuck in the general public's mind more easily. Most people are unaware that the basic aspects of our physical reality are being defined in the fifth dimension.

Imagining my fourth dimensional body as an undulating snake, with my conceived self at one end and my deceased self at the other, is one of the starting points of my visual way of imagining the dimensions. Imagining the fifth dimensional branches of choice and possibility that extend out from this moment shows how a hard determinist could look back in time and see the proof that there is only one reality, because after the fact that is all we can see; while a person believing in free will can look forward into the fifth dimension and see that their future is not written in stone after all. However: going through that exercise artificially diminishes the size and import of what has come before, since the undulating snake leading back to the beginning of my physical body seems to be much smaller than the exploding dandelion seed of the possible branches set before me from this moment forward.

"Angels of Possibility"
So now, let's think of our bodies in the sixth dimension, which contains all possible timelines for our particular universe. Where is my sixth dimensional self the largest? If you think about it for a moment, you will see it is at the moment of conception. From there, the branching possibilities that will get me to some version of my adult self are exponentially larger than any time thereafter. This seems to relate to Terence McKenna's "timewave zero" concept, which suggests that novelty increases as the end of the universe approaches, but it is the mirror image at "right angles" to his idea: the possible cusps of change that an embryo or even a small child have before them are absolutely immense compared to the more limited subset that we have left to choose from by the time we are adults. Here is one of the more often-quoted paragraphs from my book:

"The beautiful blossoming potential we see in a newborn child is an immensely attractive thing. The angels of possibility that swirl around a toddler’s head can be breathtaking if we catch even a fleeting glimpse. And there is nothing as sad as the tragedy of a child who has been mistreated or abused, and whose life may never be the same because of it. Even from our limited window in the lower dimensions, it is easy for us to intuitively understand what is magical and wonderful about the promise of a child, a promise that is held within the sixth dimension."

Religious teachings which say we should approach the Lord as a little child resonate with this idea as well. That reverence, that sense of wonder, that appreciation of the novelty and the vast potential that are held in every instant of time, in every quark and neutrino, and in the spirit energy all around us is part of an awakening that all of us as adults yearn for. On the other hand, whether we are talking about the death of a spirit or the death of a physical body, what we are really talking about is what happens when those processes cease to be interested in "what happens next".

"And in The End..."
What does timelessness mean for me? Because time is an illusion, it means that once any of us breaks out of our physical reality, there we will find all the other branches of our sixth dimensional selves, waiting to greet us and compare notes on the journey, and see how everything fits together.

And that is what enjoying the journey should always be about.

Rob

Waveforms in the Ten Dimensions

The simultaneous wave/particle nature of reality means that many things that appear to us as particles are waves just being observed in a certain state. By the time we have arrived at the tenth dimension as the enfolded timeless whole (as explained so well by Gevin Giorbran), we have finally reached what some people think of as God, or a state of enlightenment (as referred to in Tom Huston's article about this project in the current issue of What Is Enlightenment?, or the ultimate theory of everything.

In Imagining the Tenth Dimension, I spend a lot of time talking about triads, insisting that all dualities have a third option, which can be both, neither, or no choice. Our physical world interacts with a world of memes and spirit, and the third option that results can be life as we know it, or it can be just the timeless whole that represents every possibility contained within the multiverse. But the dualities of one order pushing against another as we move along our line of time (a line that is actually created by a series of slices, here we go again with that simultaneous wave/particle stuff) allow us to see that this instant in time is a slice of a waveform, and that waveform is reflected in the beautiful and complex universe that we see around us.

Waveforms are interesting, because one waveform can incorporate many different frequencies simultaneously. So, a simple single line drawn from the big bang to the end of the universe can be overlaid with the many different waveforms representing the many possible expressions of reality, and the organizing dynamics that push against each other to create the preference for one kind of reality over another in different parts of the multiverse.

One of the reviewers for my book on Amazon.com has this to say:

"The present exposition is an imaginative and strangely "musical" way of imaging superimposed dimensions--not surprising perhaps, since the author among his achievements also is a musician. Still, the treatise has relevance for physicists. It is also pleasurable to read."
(thanks for the kind words!).

I suppose, since I spend a lot of my work day staring at waveforms, thinking of reality as being a complex waveform precipitated from potentials contained within the higher dimensions doesn't seem like much of a leap to me. Once you arrive at this idea, you have a way of explaining entrainment (how like attracts like, how attitude affects outcome, how eating live veggies imparts healthful vibrations, how charismatic or depressed personalities can immediately impart their "vibe" to a room full of people, how "Sync" as described by Steven Strogatz can cause order to arise out of chaos, how thoughts become things, and so on).

Thinking of our reality as a waveform also shows how there are always certain sets of "you can't get there from here" points in our physical reality (both past and future), but how a reality of memes and spirit can move more freely across time and space. This week in the blog dedicated to lucid dreaming, "Dreaming Life" , host Ben Q. published an interview with me where we discuss some of those ideas. I encourage you to check out this fascinating blog on a regular basis.

One of the most unusual and convincing examples of how reality could be constructed from waveforms, and the possiblity that the mind can be used to change our reality came to me a few months ago from Deena Zalkind Spear, whose lovely book "Ears of the Angels" tells a story most of us would have thought unbelievable, had it not been collaborated by so many intelligent and sensitive classical musicians. Told with a self-deprecating sense of humor, Deena's book is a pleasure to read, and I recommend it highly if you're looking for something that will challenge your limited worldview of physical reality.

Finally, while we're talking about vibrations and waveforms, we have now posted my song "Everything Fits Together" to a site called "JamGlue", which allows you to remix all of the instrumental and vocal parts to the song in whatever way that pleases you (click on the Remix button to see the song as six sets of waveforms, and you may want to work through the tutorials on the site to see what the possibilities are). These "stems" (as we call them in the audio industry) can also be downloaded from Amie Street, so if you have an audio sequencer of your own, I invite you to cut and paste this material to your heart's content. And please, email me mp3s of any of your mashups of this song you think are worth listening to (rob at tenthdimension dot com), and I will post them at a future date. These songs are released under a Creative Commons license, basically this says you are free to play with and re-edit this material as long as you give me credit as the original composer, and do not sell your remixes.

Enjoy the journey,

Rob

Spirituality, Connections, and the Tenth Dimension

This week an excerpt from chapter three of my book was released in the online magazine CRAM, check it out.

The very first issue of this magazine caught my eye when I saw the following three tidbits at the top of the very first page:
“+ About 2500 people in the United States have the last name Cram, accounting for .001% of last names. + Card Random Access Memory (C.R.A.M.) was a type of magnetic storage device used in the early 1960’s. + The 1940 twelve-inch Cram’s Terrestrial Illuminated Glass Globe is notable for a few reasons…”

Aha!, I said to myself. It’s clear to me that this magazine understands the points I have been making with the tenth dimension project: that there are systems of belief, collections of memes, and shared consensual reality that connect us all across time and space. Those 2500 people with the last name CRAM, even though they represent only .001% of the last names in the US, would represent a random access database that would be surprisingly representative of the many ways of looking at the world that all of us share, and would also allow us to quickly find some of those in the world who have unique points of view.

I’ll be the first to admit that I may have been reading more into the connections between those three tidbits than was intended by the editors of Cram. But I stand by the interpretation: as this project (the 11-minute animation, the website, the book, the songs, the videos, and this blog) have found their way into the world, I am continually surprised at the new connections people find to my way of imagining the ten dimensions and their own systems of belief.

In the past week I have been contacted by a number of people with strong Christian beliefs, thanking me for giving them a way to describe a reality which seems connected to science and cosmology but leaves room for there to be creator, or a force in the world that is working towards an ultimately positive outcome. In the book I approach this idea several different ways – from the anthropic viewpoint, our universe seems to have already been selected from a multiverse of universes, the vast majority of which would have been inhospitable to life as we know it. From the role of the quantum observer collapsing/observing reality from an indeterminate wave of possibilities, we already seem to be on a trajectory established at the big bang which is moving us along on a timeline towards a version of our universe which will last much longer than the many less stable configurations which could have been selected. I also touch on ideas of how the voices of conscience, intuition, memories of loved ones, storytelling from previous generations, and more metaphysical manifestations such as ghosts or angels, spirit guides and even alien presences could all be possible examples of how a system of beliefs and memes work “behind the scenes”, so to speak, to help define our consensual reality.

What I try to be very careful to do in the book is not force one way of interpreting all this upon the reader: whether one chooses to believe in a Creator who drives this whole impossibly complex mechanism forward, or if one believes in a Blind Watchmaker of chance and natural selection, what we our now experiencing as our reality is the same. As I say in Chapter Two:

The reader may notice here that it would be very easy to substitute “God” or “The Creator” in place of “the observer” in the above paragraphs. In fact, if the reader is comfortable with the concept of each of us being an expression of God, “created in His/Her image”, each with a holy spark within, then the two viewpoints are quite compatible. On the other hand though, the image of a God who is separate from, standing in judgement of, and meting out punishment to us all is much less compatible. What we are describing here is a reality where each of us is creating an expression of a specific aspect inferred within the “white noise” of the tenth dimension through our individual roles as quantum observers. If the reader finds it easier to accept the phrase “I am an aspect of God” than they do the previous sentence, then they should feel free to use that as their jumping off point instead. As we discussed before, the tenth dimension as we are conceptualizing it here is really the boring part of our discussion, because it simultaneously contains all possibilities. If we choose to imagine a Creator-God who is manifesting Himself/Herself through each one of us, we are imagining an observer who is cutting cross-sections out of the tenth dimension to examine the much more interesting and highly detailed subsets of reality which are contained within the dimensions below.

There are many more interpretations of my way of imagining the dimensions which people have brought to me – I was immediately surprised, for instance, at the number of people who had taken various hallucinogens and felt that what they had seen and experienced could be interpreted through the filter of what I’m presenting. As I’ve said a number of times in the tenth dimension forum, I don’t have any experience with hallucinogens myself, but I find such suggestions fascinating.

In the past week I’ve also received several emails from people convinced that the end of the world is coming in 2012, another topic I explore in the book. In the book I said that I expect that this is a rising tide of belief that will become increasingly popular over the next few years. The End of the World is also one of the 26 songs I have written for this project, and this idea will no doubt be a recurring theme in future blogs.

I should also point out that the Amazon “Search Inside this Book” function is now activated for my book, so that any ideas explored in the blog can also now be typed into Amazon’s search function to read excerpts from the book. Referencing the Index for the book will also provide you with search terms for further exploration.

Enjoy the journey!

Rob
