This is a song about contemplating your own death, and the question that nearly everyone has an opinion on: does some part of me carry on after I die? This video shows me sitting at my old piano singing this song:

We've already stacked a number of ideas on top of each other as we work from one song to the next. In Song 3, "Burn the Candle Brightly" we talked about that mysterious spark that each of us holds within us, and how that connects us to all life. Now, with this song "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" and the previous song "Connections", we are spending more time exploring that spark of awareness that becomes the "I" that Douglas Hofstadter is exploring in his wonderful book "I Am a Strange Loop", and thinking about how these ideas fit in with this new way of imagining the dimensions. Does Hofstadter's Strange Loop need a physical body to continue? Is it possible for there to be other patterns across space and time that carry on past death, or that what we think of as a "soul" can become a part of after death? I'm aware that some readers of my book are not comfortable with discussions of ghosts and spirit, which is fair enough because everyone is entitled to their own opinion on these matters. But even if we leave that spooky stuff aside for those people, there is still Minsky's "Society of Mind" which can be combined with the Richard Dawkins concept of memes to shows how our minds are created from a complex interlocking series of patterns and behaviors, beliefs and ideas. If we think of memes as something that can be transmitted across space and time without dilution, then some of those patterns that make up a person's consciousness are part of that same set of patterns that define a particular meme. Hence: the parts of our consciousness that are part of a meme system that exists across space and time gives us a way to see how it must be true that some parts of us carry on past death. Extrapolating that idea back to the "voices of conscience, gods and ancestors" is the other big leap that I make from this idea in song 5, "Automatic".

The way of visualizing the dimensions that we're exploring here is about much more than physics: it's about patterns in space and time that form the universe, patterns that we can think of as "big-picture memes" that cause one universe to be selected instead of another, and help us to think of life as being something that happens when those patterns become interested in their own propagation across space and time.

What does it mean when we say an artist is trying to communicate a universal truth? Why are we trained to be cynical about lowest-common-denominator entertainment that appeals to the largest number of people around the world? Aren't both of these ideas really strongly related, after all? If a pop song touches a large number of people because it says something that a large group were thinking about or wanted to say, does that mean it should be dismissed as not really being art? Likewise, if a piece of music says something that only a small part of the world wanted to say or hear, but to those people the song is deeply significant, does that make it more or less of a work of art than the piece that spoke to a great number of people? By the time we've imagined the timelessness that our reality is carved from, and the organizing patterns that have caused our current reality to be the one selected from a great many other possible universes within the multiverse, we have ways to imagine how instinct, empathy, and emotions can be connected across space and time. When a piece of music communicates an emotion, it is drawing from a complex web of physical and cultural resonances that echo back through our shared experience as human beings, and even as living creatures: this is how we can often automatically tell whether a piece of music is about anger, or relaxation, or joy, or agitation, or whatever.

It's all about connections, and this songs pays tribute to the great artists who touch so many by being plugged so deeply into the patterns that define us all in ways we are only beginning to appreciate. Here are the lyrics to this song.

In a nutshell, one of the recurring themes with this project is that there are patterns across space and time that represent ideas, beliefs, preferences for one outcome over another, and I have placed all of those concepts under the general heading of memes. I believe this is not that big of a leap from the mysteries of instinct - how does an animal have access to a huge body of behaviors and knowledge about the world? Because there are patterns that already exist across space and time that are part of that particular creature's structure. How does a goose migrating for the first time know what to do? Is it like there is a little voice inside that goose giving it instructions? As fanciful a way as that might be to describe it, that appears to be the process: when the animal needs to know what to do, some message wells up from within their genetic material and provides them with the information.

Julian Jaynes made the great intuitive leap that says it may be a very recent development for human beings to be operating as we currently do, with a conscious "narrator voice" saying "now I'm going to do this, now I'm not going to do that". In "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind", Jaynes suggests (somewhat astonishingly, I admit) that as little as two thousand years ago we operated more like that migrating goose. For humans operating in that mode, decisions about what to do next might have been heard internally as the voices of gods, or ancestors, and this would not be that different from the voices of conscience or intuition that tell modern humans what to do and what not to do. The idea that it was possible for civilizations to develop while humans were operating in this "non-conscious" mode may seem impossible at first glance, but as Jaynes and this song points out, there are still many tasks that we can actually perform better when that "narrator voice" ceases its nattering and lets us perform complex actions like playing musical instruments, driving a car, or hitting a golf ball. In other words, I believe Julian Jaynes got it right.

Let's recap where we are so far with these songs:
1. Everything Fits Together - at the quantum level information equals reality. Our universe is a pattern in that information, one of many other patterns within the multiverse. All of those patterns enfold back together into absolute zero of timelessness, which is the underlying fabric of quantum indeterminacy.
2. Seven Levels - As quantum physicist Seth Lloyd says in his book "Programming the Universe" - the big bang can be thought of as the very first binary yes/no in the information that becomes our reality. This song, The Unseen Dye, was written years before Dr. Lloyd's book was published, but it says the same thing.
3. Burn the Candle Brightly - "life" can also be thought of as a pattern in the information that is our reality. Any process that becomes interested in "what happens next" within the patterns of information that create our reality can develop strategies for its own continuation and propogation, which relates to the Richard Dawkins idea of Selfish Genes and Selfish Memes.
4. The Unseen Eye - which leads to the big question of the role of the quantum observer - is the universe observing itself? Are we each a part of that process, operating within our own observer-region? And is it possible, by the time we have imagined patterns in the information/reality of such exquisite complexity that they create you and I and the universe we live in, that it could all just be the result of random chance, tiny fluctuations in the underlying quantum fabric of indeterminacy? And if that's the case, is our world any less amazing, any less worthy of praise?

One of the very simple and self-evident truths that is discussed in my book is that attitude affects outcome. Have you ever heard someone say "I was too busy to get sick so I didn't"? Do you know of an elderly person who lost their will to live and died shortly thereafter? Have you ever worked through a simple deep breathing exercise and found yourself feeling more alive, more in tune with the world around you? We live with mysteries like these all the time, and of course there is a huge worldwide industry built around self-help programs that thrive because people are looking for ways to make their lives better. This song is about those simple truths that are what make self-help programs succeed: because it's all about how attitude affects outcome, and if we're imagining a multiverse and a set of branching parallel universes that result from a combination of choice, chance and circumstance, then the above mysteries make a little more sense.

As I say in the book, life is any process that becomes interested in "what happens next". This open-ended definition applies just as well to us as it does to the very first chemical processes that started life on earth when they somehow developed strategies that enabled their own propogation from generation to generation. It also applies to other versions of "life" that scientists are beginning to imagine as they explore the other possible expressions of matter and energy that exist within our own universe, and by extension the other universes of the multiverse. "Burn the Candle" takes those high-falutin' ideas and turns it into a simple country song to talk about a simple truth.

String theorists tell us our reality is created by the interaction of a seven-dimensional brane with a three-dimensional brane. According to the visualization of the ten dimensions we're playing with here, our particular 3D universe is locked in at the seventh dimension, a similar concept. This means that although there are ten dimensions to reality, all there really are for our own universe is seven, with the seventh through ninth dimensions being what you navigate through to get to all the other points representing other "different-initial conditions" universes, and ways of organizing the information that is our reality. Once we navigated through those higher dimensions to some other different-initial-conditions universe, we could then see how that universe could have its own unique spacetime tree in the dimensions below, completely separate from but just as real as our own.

The interesting tie-in to this is that eastern mystics and a number of ancient belief systems also assign a special significance to the number seven as a level of highest attainment. This song plays with those ideas.

If there is an over-riding theme for the Imagining the Tenth Dimension Project, this is it: "Everything Fits Together". As Gevin Giorbran has so eloquently shown in his book "Everything Forever: Learning to See Timelessness", everything about our universe (and every other possible universe in the multiverse) ultimately folds back together into absolute zero. And, as Seth Lloyd explains so well in his book "Programming the Universe", this unobserved quantum fabric that my way of visualizing the dimensions starts from and ends with is the place where we can understand how "Information Equals Reality". Once you have worked your way through this way of visualizing the ten dimensions, these ideas and many more all fit together.

While I'm grateful to the people who like parts of what I have created enough to want to buy it and help support this project, I hope that everyone can appreciate that Imagining the Tenth Dimension gives away a huge amount of videos, music and information for free. That's because I am interested in getting the ideas behind this project out into the world, as I firmly believe that I have stumbled upon a way of imagining reality which reveals basic truths, and is eventually going to be confirmed by mainstream science. There is a beautiful simplicity to the logic of this way of layering one dimension upon another, and its strength as a visualization tool is no doubt one of the reasons why so many deep thinkers and big dreamers continue to be drawn to the project.

In the meantime, the basic ideas behind this way of imagining are useful to anyone, because it gives us a way to see how Everything Fits Together: the positive and negative, the grouping and symmetry, the long chain of random events and deliberate actions that got us to the "now" that we are currently experiencing. Everything enfolds back into the underlying fabric of reality that this new way of thinking about time and space allows us to hold in our minds.
